03 / Board advisory

Board advisory

A clear perspective. A trusted sounding board.

Independent support for founders, CEOs and leadership teams facing important decisions.

Good decisions start with better conversations.

Leading a business can be a lonely role. A board advisor gives you space to test an idea, discuss a concern and challenge your assumptions with someone who understands the pressures.

I help clarify business objectives, support productive board discussions and improve communication between the founder and the executive team. Where useful, I also make introductions to people who can help the business progress.

Working on the business

The focus is strategic: understanding the customer, aligning the leadership team and considering what will strengthen the business and its enterprise value.

Board advisory is an advisory engagement. Executive responsibility sits with your leadership team; a formal non-executive appointment is a separate service.

A typical advisory conversation

  1. Explore

    Understand the issue

Bring the context, perspectives and underlying assumptions into the open.

  2. Challenge

    Test the options

Consider customer needs, team implications and the trade-offs behind different choices.

  3. Clarify

    Agree what happens next

Help the leadership team identify the decision, its owner and the next discussion needed.

Choosing the right role

Advisory support with clear boundaries.

How does this differ from a non-executive appointment?

Board advisory is an advisory engagement. A non-executive appointment is a formal board role with governance responsibilities. We agree the appropriate relationship and remit explicitly.

Can you work with more than the founder?

Yes. The work can include the CEO and other senior leaders, especially where communication, alignment and decision-making across the team are central to the challenge.

Is this a route to an executive role?

The advisory role stands on its own. If the business needs hands-on executive delivery, that should be discussed and scoped as a separate fractional leadership engagement.
